Hawaii Residence

Hawaii sits at the intersection of the world's great natural material traditions — Pacific timber, volcanic stone, woven pandanus — and the best Hawaiian residential design draws from all of them. The Hawaii Residence brief asked Azula Designs to bring this existing tradition into dialogue with our Indonesian material expertise.

The house organises itself around its outdoor life. The terrace, BBQ area, gathering zone near the terrace, and pool area together constitute the home's primary living space — a Hawaiian reality that the interior design follows rather than fights. Interior spaces are designed as comfortable, beautifully finished retreats from the sun, not as the main event.

The foyer is the project's first statement: a composed arrival experience that establishes the material palette — warm timber, natural stone, and carefully chosen lighting — before the house reveals itself room by room.

The BBQ and outdoor dining area is treated as seriously as the indoor kitchen and dining room — fully designed, properly furnished, and oriented to the views the site offers. The gathering area near the terrace bridges the more formal outdoor dining with the pool, creating a social circuit that allows a large group to occupy different zones simultaneously without feeling disconnected.

The garage — an often-overlooked space in residential design — is treated here as a design opportunity: a clean, considered space that maintains the material standards of the house right to its edge.
