Milan Apartement

The Milan Apartment brief was one of the most culturally demanding Azula Designs has undertaken — designing a residential interior in Italy's design capital, for a client who expected the result to hold its own in a city where interior design is taken seriously as a discipline.

The response was to lean into the contrast rather than attempt to imitate: an interior that is unmistakably informed by the Indonesian craft tradition — natural materials, handcrafted details, a warmth in the palette — while meeting the compositional rigour that Milanese design culture demands.

The meditation room is the project's most distinctive space and the clearest expression of this philosophy. A dedicated room for stillness and reflection — rare in urban apartments anywhere, exceptional in Milan — fitted with natural material surfaces, considered acoustics, and lighting designed for inward focus rather than social performance.

The living and dining space works as a single flowing room, divided by furniture placement rather than architecture. The kitchen counter and kitchen bar maintain the project's material consistency: warm timber, considered hardware, surfaces that show the hand of their making.

The patio — accessed directly from the living area — provides the connection to the outside that urban Milanese apartments rarely achieve, and is furnished with pieces from Azula Designs' outdoor collection to extend the indoor design language into the exterior space.

The master bedroom is quiet, composed, and materiality-rich — a deliberate contrast to the stimulation of the city outside the windows.
